Against the 7th-cent. B.C. background, the conditional phrase “until the LORD gives rest” contains the hope of a future transformation of the troubled land into “a peaceful habitation” for the people. “Rest” as a gift of God is further stressed in the New Testament. It is to be received through a living relationship with Jesus in the actual places where people “labor and are heavy laden” (Matt. 11:28). Faith and obedience in real-life situations are conditions for accepting the gift (Heb. 4:3, 11).
